Cross Country Squads Crack Top 10 at NE10 Championship, Women Place Seventh

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College women's cross country team placed seventh among 14 squads while the men took 10th at the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Sunday at Saint Anselm College. Both squads competed in the initial NE10 Championship since fall 2019.

TEAM RESULTS

  • Bolstered by seven of their 14 competitors setting personal records, the women were seventh with 245 points, edging out eighth-place Le Moyne College (246) by one point and ninth-place Bentley University (252) by seven.
  • The Purple and Gold notched its highest showing at the meet since taking its second consecutive second-place showing in 2014. It was the team's eighth top 10 showing during head coach Molly Peters' tenure.
  • Saint Michael's had been picked 11th in this past week's pre-championship coaches' poll but bested such squads as Le Moyne and Bentley, which were chosen eighth and 10th, respectively, as well as Franklin Pierce University (ninth in the poll, 10th in the race with 267 points) and Adelphi University (seventh in the poll, 11th at NE10s with 279 points).
  • American International College, which is ranked first in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East Region poll, won with 40 points.
  • On the men's side, the Purple Knights recorded 275 points to take 10th during Peters' first year at the helm, trimming 11th-place Saint Anselm (283), the meet host.
  • Saint Michael's registered its best finish since also taking 10th in 2015, recording its second top-10 performance at NE10s since 2009. Its 275 points were the program's fewest since 2006 (272).
  • Like the women, the Purple Knight men bettered their expected finish according to the league's coaches, having been selected 12th in the pre-championship rankings. The Purple and Gold not only topped Saint Anselm, which had been picked ninth, but the University of New Haven, which was picked 11th but took 12th with 328 points.
  • AIC, which is ranked 19th nationally, won the men's meet with 28 points.
  • Fourteen of the 26 Saint Michael's men and women who competed took part in their first career NE10 Championship, with seven hailing from each squad.
