Personal records fall, Saint Michael's cross country squads compete at Albany Invitational

ALBANY, N.Y. - Personal records abound for the Saint Michael's College men's and women's cross country teams on Saturday during the 49th annual University of Albany Invitational. The Purple Knights, who last competed on Oct. 3, saw their men take 11th among 15 teams and the women place 13th out of 17 schools.

Middlebury College, which is receiving votes toward the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III national poll, won the men's meet with 74 points. Saint Michael's, which was competing in a field that included eight Division I institutions, garnered 312 points to finish within 34 of Division I Saint Bonaventure University. Albany, which sits 12th in the USTFCCCA Division I Northeast Region rankings, won the women's meet with 30 points as one of nine Division I squads. The Purple Knights had 343, within four of Division I LIU Brooklyn.

Four of the top six Purple and Gold men set PRs on Saturday. Junior Ross Henry (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) placed 54th out of 158 runners in the 8K race with a personal-best 27:15, while classmate Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) also reached a PR, clocking in at 27:34 to nab 74th place.

First-year David Baird (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) was 97th at 28:16, while sophomore Mike Boyd (Islip, N.Y./Islip) crossed the finish line in 28:43, another personal low. First-year Liam Schmelzle (Saint Louis Park, Minn./Saint Louis Park) was the fifth Purple Knight scorer, with a time of 29:04, while classmate Matthew Logue (Watertown, Conn./The Gunnery) was just three seconds behind, with that 29:07 showing his personal best.

On the women's side, first-year Emily Calder (Hopkinton, N.H./Hopkinton) led Saint Michael's for the third time in five races this fall, with her 20:19 showing in the 5K setting a career standard. She placed 95th out of 186 competitors. Junior Molly Roush (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton Central School) was 24 seconds back, and first-year Emily Kopacz (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) clocked in at 21:04. Senior Brianna McKinley (Moultonborough, N.H./Moultonborough Academy) held down the fourth spot for her team with a time of 21:19, and sophomore Roxy Withers (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) rounded out the scorers with a PR in 21:39.

First-year Ellen Emers (East Hardwick, Vt./Hazen Union) tied her personal record with a time of 21:53, and junior Alison Bourgeois (Georgia, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) just missed the 22-minute mark, clocking in at 22:04.

Saint Michael's hosts the Northeast-10 Conference Championship next Sunday for the first time since 2009. The women's race begins at 10 a.m. and the men start an hour later. Both races begin and end on the 300s Field.
