RANDOLPH CENTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College women's cross country senior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) won the Vermont Intercollegiate Championship for the second straight fall on Saturday, as the regionally-ranked Purple Knight women claimed second place and the men fourth at Vermont Technical College.
The Saint Michael's women, who were fourth in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East Region poll, scored 41 points in the six-team field to trail winner Middlebury College, which is ranked fourth nationally in Division III, by 20 points. On the men's side, the Purple and Gold had 96 points while competing among seven institutions, trailing third-place Norwich University by five points. Middlebury, which is receiving national votes, won with 24 points.
Boutelle paced a 65-woman 5K field by clocking in at 20:18, nine seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher, to earn her fifth win in the last nine races. Last year, she became only the third Purple Knight ever to win the state meet, joining Mary Lynn Denholm '09 in 2008 and Gabrielle Naranja '14 in 2011, and this season becomes the first to win it multiple times. Sophomore Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) took 13th at 29:33, just six seconds short of the top 10.
