MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's cross country team took second place only to nationally-ranked Middlebury College on Saturday during Middlebury's Aldrich Invitational. The Purple Knights scored 76 points in the seven-team field, edging Colby College (79) and Hamilton College (85), while the Panthers, who sit eighth in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III national poll, scored the minimum 15 points. The Saint Michael's men were seventh out of seven with 169 points, trailing Colby-Sawyer College by 11, with 28th-ranked Middlebury winning the competition with 30 points. Nationally-ranked Colby was also in the field.
Senior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) finished 10th among 96 entrants in the 5K to pace Saint Michael's, as she has now cracked the top 10 at nine of the past 10 races, with the lone outlier coming at the 2013 NCAA Championship. Boutelle's time was 19:35, which trailed eight harriers from Middlebury and one from Colby.
Senior Lindy Heffernan (Sutton Mills, N.H./Kearsarge Regional) was 15th in 19:51, classmate Colleen Gilliatt (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) took 19th at 20:05, and senior Allie Gratton (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) was one spot and 10 seconds short of Gilliatt. Rounding out the Purple Knight top five was sophomore Molly Roush (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton Central School), in 35th place with a time of 21:12.
In the men's 8K race, senior Alex Gilgore (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville Senior) was the top Saint Michael's finisher for the first time in his career, crossing the finish line at 28:16 in 31st place. Classmate Peter McKenna (Cohasset, Mass./Brooks School) was 43rd in 29:27, first-year Mike Boyd (Islip, N.Y./Islip) placed 51st at 30:09, and sophomore Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) nabbed 52nd in 30:33. Classmate Tyler Colbert (Byfield, Mass./Triton Regional/UMass Boston) was his team's fifth scorer, taking 55th thanks to a time of 30:50.
The Purple Knights break until Oct. 4, when they head to Vermont Technical College for the Vermont Intercollegiate Championship, which the Saint Michael's women won in 2013. The women's race kicks off at 11 a.m., followed by the men an hour later.
