CASTLETON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's cross country team won its first Vermont Intercollegiate Championship on Saturday at Castleton State College, with junior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) becoming the third Purple Knight to claim the individual title, all within the past six years.
The Purple and Gold women, who were the meet's runner-up each of the past three years, won the eight-team event, posting 16 points, just one more than the minimum. On the men's side, Saint Michael's was third among eight institutions, with its 83 points only eight shy of second-place Castleton State, and six more than fourth-place Norwich University.
Boutelle's victory, the first of her college career, came thanks to a time of 19:46 in a 73-runner field. She joins Mary Lynn Denholm '09 (2008) and Gabrielle Naranja '14 (2011) as the only women in school history to win the state meet.
Purple Knights took the top four spots, and six of the highest eight positions. Junior Lindy Heffernan (Sutton Mills, N.H./Kearsarge Regional) was second in 20:22, classmate Colleen Gilliatt (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) was third at 20:37, and junior Allie Gratton's (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) fourth-place showing came thanks to a time of 20:44. Senior Daniela Czark (New York, N.Y./The Elan School) claimed sixth place to round out her team's top five.
Senior Mary Miller (Aurora, N.Y./Southern Cayuga) nabbed eighth, while four others cracked the top 20. First-year Katrina Wiesner (Bow, N.H./Bow) was 11th, classmate Alison Bourgeois (Georgia, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) 13th, sophomore Catherine Tierney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) 18th and senior Elena Bilodeau (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union) 19th.
The Saint Michael's men were third at the state meet for the third time in four years, as junior Peter McKenna (Cohasset, Mass./Brooks School) led the way in sixth, finishing one second short of the top five, at 27:33. Classmate Alex Gilgore (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville Senior) placed 14th in 28:28, first-year Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) took 15th in 28:30, and senior Dana Glubiak (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) was only three seconds back in 16th place. Sophomore Jake Jarecki (Monroe, Conn./Saint Joseph) was the Purple Knights' fifth scorer, nabbing 35th.
Both squads head to the Keene State College Invitational next Saturday, where the women race at 11 a.m. before the men follow 45 minutes later.
