THE ACTION

  • Welch carried the Purple Knights during a 9-0 run in the opening set that turned a two-point edge into a 16-5 lead, downing six kills in that time alone, including four straight at one point. Still down 19-12 after Báez Rentas' kill, the Panthers went ahead and held set point, 24-23, thanks to a 12-4 counter. Patterson tied the score with a kill before Saint Michael's reached set point of its own on a tandem block by Báez Rentas and Syverson, but senior Emilee Flanagan and sophomore Lindsey Sanderson both had a kill and a block during a clinching 3-0 run.
  • After Flanagan's kill pushed the Panthers' lead to 13-8 in the second set, five straight points - all on miscues - allowed Saint Michael's to forge a tie. Junior Haley Stanton (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North) put down a kill for a 15-all tie, but Butler posted five aces during an 8-0 response.
  • Curley's kill forced another 15-15 deadlock in set No. 3 before the Panthers looked on the verge of sweeping the match thanks to a 7-2 run. However, Welch finished off a tying 5-0 run to make it 22-22 and, after junior Ryley McNeeley's go-ahead kill, Welch again posted a tying kill, and the final two Purple Knight points came on errors.
  • Plymouth State led 3-2 in the fourth set, but the Purple and Gold took control with a 6-0 counter, extending its lead to 22-12 on O'Connor's kill. A pair of Stogner aces keyed a 6-1 run, bringing the Panthers within 23-18, but Syverson responded with a kill, and an error knotted the match.
  • Neither team led by more than two points in the fifth set until Stogner and junior Nora Ryan had kills in a tie-breaking 3-0 run, giving Plymouth State a 9-6 advantage on the final lead swing. The Purple Knights edged within a single point three times down the stretch, including on Curley's kill to make it 11-10, but Butler notched an ensuing kill as her team scored four of the final six points.
