Women's Volleyball Splits Pair, Blanks SUNY Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday during the opening day of the State University of New York at Plattsburgh's Cardinal Classic in Memorial Hall Gymnasium. The Purple Knights blanked the hosts, 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-23), before sticking with the United States Coast Guard Academy in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-15) setback. The Bears were ranked fourth in the final 2021 NCAA Division III Region II rankings.

THE ACTION

  • A pair of aces by O'Connor helped the visitors grab a 6-1 lead in the opening set. The Cardinals rallied to tie three times on Lyon kills, including at 12-all, before Curley's kill started a 3-0 spurt, and Saint Michael's led 21-18 on O'Connor's kill. The hosts netted the next three points, but Saint Michael's scored the final three points of the match, with Patterson's kill tying the teams, an Orth ace producing the final lead swing, and O'Connor finishing off the victory on a kill.

THE ACTION

  • Neither team led by more than two points in the opening set until Shaw's kill made it 13-10. The Purple Knights were still down just 18-15 before the Bears pulled away on the strength of a 5-1 run.
  • The second set was similarly close, as Patterson's consecutive kills gave the Purple and Gold a 15-12 edge, the largest lead for either team to that point. A pair of Wildsmith aces keyed a 4-0 response, with the run ultimately extending to 8-1 behind two kills from junior Elizabeth Atkinson. Syverson kills twice brought Saint Michael's within four points, but the Bears recorded kills for the final two points.
  • Saint Michael's tallied the first two points of set No. 3, but Coast Guard scored 11 of the next 13 and never again led by fewer than six points.
