THE ACTION

  • The Purple Knights led 2-0 early in the first set behind Báez Rentas' kill and first-year Jillian Orth's (Bourne, Mass./Bourne) ace before four of the next five points went to the Golden Knights. Huihui-Martinez's ace keyed a go-ahead 3-0 run, and the hosts led 12-7 on Krause's kill. Still up 13-8, the Purple Knights saw Saint Rose counter with a 12-2 stretch, as Fripp turned in three kills. A Gallagher kill, Curley and Gallagher tandem block, and Wright ace accounted for a 3-0 run that brought Saint Michael's within 20-18, but junior Megan Mayer's kill kicked off a 3-0 response, and the visitors never again led by fewer than three points.
  • Consecutive kills by Garrelts and Sellers gave the Golden Knights an 8-3 advantage in set No. 2 before the Purple Knights used an 11-4 jaunt to go in front, with Syverson turning in three kills alone in a capping 5-0 run that made it 14-12. Neither team led again by more than two points until Saint Rose went ahead 23-20, and again at 24-21 on Fripp's kill. Consecutive kills by Curley and O'Connor created a one-point margin before an error at set point gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.
  • Sellers' kill had the Golden Knights up 7-5 in the third set before Gallagher's kill and three miscues put the hosts ahead at 9-7. Saint Rose countered with a 12-4 run, as five different players had kills en route to their team leading 19-13. Saint Michael's utilized a 7-1 stretch to knot the set, with Gallagher netting two kills and Cruz posting an ace for the tying point. The visitors held the hosts off the board from there, scoring the final five points, with Garrelts accounting for a kill and a block in that time.
