Women's Volleyball Nabs Early Lead in 3-1 Loss to 2017 NCAA Qualifier Saint Anselm

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team won the opening set and nearly nabbed a two-set advantage on 2017 NCAA Tournament qualifier Saint Anselm College before losing 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-15) on Tuesday evening during Northeast-10 Conference play in the Ross Sports Center.

  • Saint Michael's opened a six-match run during which five matches are at home.

  • Saint Michael's trailed 8-3 in the opening set before rallying within 9-8 on Barton's kill, but Saint Anselm pushed its edge back out to 14-11. Junior Allie Statile (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) had two kills in a 4-0 response, which became a 12-4 run by the time Cruz posted an ace at 23-18. The Hawks rallied within 24-23 on Schamp's kill, but an attack error for the next point allowed Saint Michael's to capture the set.
  • The teams played through 11 ties and eight lead changes in set No. 2, with neither leading by more than three points until the final tally. Jolly's ace put the visitors up 18-15, but two kills by Ratte in a 4-0 run forced another lead change. After the Hawks netted the next three points then committed an error to lead only 21-20, they rattled off a clinching 4-1 run.
  • Eleven more ties and five lead changes came in the third set, when neither squad led by more than two points until Schamp's kill made it 18-15. Saint Michael's twice chipped within two points, including at 19-17 on Barton's kill, but the Hawks collected the final six points, with Jolly contributing three kills.
  • Two kills from Gallagher helped the Purple Knights take a 6-1 lead in the fourth set, and the hosts still led 11-9 on Barton's kill before the next seven points came from Hawks in what grew to a match-ending 16-4 run.
