COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College women's soccer junior Katie Escobedo (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina) was named both Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, Sept. 12. First-year Elani Gikas (Peabody, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) landed on the NE10 Weekly Honor Roll.
Escobedo made 13 saves while posting a pair of shutouts during a 2-0 week. She tied her career high with eight stops in a 1-0 overtime win against Dominican (N.Y.) College on Wednesday before making five more saves in a 1-0 triumph at regionally-ranked Pace University on Saturday. The Setters were 10th in the latest United Soccer Coaches East Region poll. Escobedo is tied for the NCAA Division II lead in shutouts (3) while tying for first in the NE10 in wins (3). She is also tied for fourth in the league in saves per game (4.5), tied for seventh in save percentage (.857), and ninth in goals-against average (0.71).
Gikas, a rookie back, tallied on a free kick in the 92nd minute of the Purple Knights' victory against Dominican, becoming the initial Saint Michael's first-year to net an overtime winner since Liz Freiberger '11 on Oct. 13, 2007. She has started all four games in the backfield this season.
Now 3-1 for the first time since 2008, and 1-0 in the NE10, the Purple Knights host regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. The Penmen, who qualified for the last three NCAA Tournaments, were second in last week's United Soccer Coaches East Region poll.
