COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey junior Sophia Burns (Syracuse, N.Y./Syracuse Nationals) was named to the New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) All-Sportswomanship Team on Tuesday, as put forward by head coach Chris Donovan.

Burns has appeared in 24 of 26 games for the Purple Knights this season. A forward, Burns turned in her first career points as a junior, netting two goals, including one game-winner, with an assist. She adds 11 blocked shots. Burns' tally 5:58 into the first period on Feb. 18 stood as the winner against Post University.

A two-year NEWHA All-Academic qualifier and regular Dean's List honoree, Burns is the NEWHA's initial student-athlete representative to the College Hockey for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committee. She remains active in College Hockey 4DEI as one of 12 student-athlete committee members from Division I men's and women's ice hockey conferences around the nation. Burns also mentors local female ice hockey players through the Girls 4 Hockey organization. Donovan cited her hard-working nature and professionalism in addressing teammates and coaches alike as reasons for his nomination. "Sophia is a tremendous asset and role model for our team," he added.

As the sixth seed in the NEWHA Tournament, the Purple and Gold takes a 3-22-1 record into a first-round contest at No. 3 Saint Anselm College tonight at 7 p.m. The winner advances to Friday's semifinals.
