Swimming & Diving Teams Swept by Clarkson During Home Dual Meet

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams were swept by Clarkson University on Saturday in the Ross Sports Center natatorium. The Purple Knight women lost to the Golden Knight women, 193-84, while the men lost a 203-95 decision.

THE ACTION

  • Amedio, Butzirus, Conliffe and Wilk opened the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay (1:56.86), holding off the runner-up by 0.45 seconds.
  • Amedio also topped the 200-yard breaststroke (2:43.56) by 0.16 seconds while taking second in the 100 breast, just 0.02 ticks short of first. Butzirus took the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.72) and was third during the 100-yard butterfly. Wilk won the 50-yard freestyle (25.94) and nearly captured two additional races, placing second in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 free by 0.10 and 0.52 seconds, respectively.
  • Junior Emma Jane Tagliaferro (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) was second in the 200 back while taking third in the 200 free, coming within 0.26 seconds of the runner-up. She joined Conliffe and sophomores Caroline Gust (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) and Emily McLane (Morrisonville, N.Y./Peru) to nab third in the 200 free relay.
  • McLane was third in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events.

THE ACTION

  • Similar to the women's meet, the Purple Knights captured the opening 200 medley relay, with Imbergamo, Kane, McGurn and Prograis taking the top spot (1:42.17) by 0.24 seconds.
  • McGurn also won the 100 breast (1:04.49) by 0.23 seconds, while Kane was fourth, just 0.01 seconds out of third place and 0.43 ticks away from second. McGurn finished third in the 200 breast, 0.05 seconds away from the runner-up, and Imbergamo was second in the 1,000 free and third in the 500 free. The duo joined sophomore Lucas Petruzziello (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) and first-year Will Englehardt (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) to place second in the 200 free relay, trailing the winning quartet by 0.36 ticks.
  • Settle won the first one-meter diving event (138.97) before taking second in the second, trailing by 0.59 points. Junior Dennis Sullivan (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) was third in the opener and fourth in the second competition, trailing third-place classmate Liam Burke (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) by 4.65 points.
  • Kane was the 50 free runner-up, while Englehardt was 0.17 seconds out of third. Englehardt also took second in the 100 free, coming within 0.02 seconds of victory, and third during the 100 fly, trailing the second-place finisher by 0.09 ticks.
  • Sophomore Will Granger (Andover, Mass./Andover) was third in the 200 free, classmate Trevor Johnson (Salem, Mass./Salem) was third in the 200 IM, and sophomore Brendan Hopping (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) was 0.31 seconds short of the top three in the 200 back.
