Two Alpine skiers finish in top 20, Saint Michael's takes 10th at UVM Carnival

STOWE, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams placed 10th out of 16 schools for the second straight weekend when the University of Vermont Carnival came to a close on Saturday. The Purple Knights scored 226 points, while the hosts won with 940. Alpine races occurred at Stowe Mountain Resort, and the Nordic events took place at Trapp Family Lodge.

Junior Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) placed 17th in the men's slalom with a two-run combined time of 1:54.27, while classmate Kevin Krone (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) placed 19th at 1:55.03. Krone claimed his second career top-20 finish. No other Purple Knight made a second run.

The Purple Knight women saw two skiers make major improvements between their first and second runs on Saturday. First-year Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) was 49th after her morning trek but trimmed 10.14 seconds during a 1:02.87 second run to finish 28th, at 2:15.88. Senior Shannon Conroy (Auburn, Calif./Home Schooled) placed 37th in 2:25.12, and sophomore Abigail Hotaling (Fabius, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) finished 41st in 2:42.66. Hotaling cut 11.52 ticks after standing 56th following her initial effort of the day.

Senior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) led the Purple Knights during the women's mass-start 10K classic race in 59th place, crossing the finish line in 37:47.9, while junior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) narrowly trailed in 61st, at 37:57.2. First-year Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) took 72nd with a time of 38:57.7 to complete her team's top three.

On the Nordic men's side, sophomore Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) nabbed 60th in the mass-start 15K classic event in a time of 46:50.0. Seniors Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) and Sam Hammond (Oakdale, Minn./North) were 78th in 51:10.0 and 82nd at 52:55.1, respectively.

Saint Michael's hosts its first carnival since 2010 next weekend, as the Alpine events will take place at Smugglers' Notch Resort in Jeffersonville, while Nordic races are slated for Sleepy Hollow Inn, Ski and Bike Center in Huntington. Friday's day-one action kicks off with the first run of the women's giant slalom at 9:30 a.m.
