HANCOCK, Vt./RIPTON, Vt. - Saint Michael's College Alpine skiing sophomore Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) finished ninth in the giant slalom on Saturday during the season-ending Middlebury College Carnival, earning the last qualifying spot for next month's NCAA Championship in the process.
Between Alpine and Nordic events at the meet, which was also the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Championship and NCAA East Regional Championship, the Purple Knights claimed a season-high 10th among 15 institutions. Alpine races were held at the Middlebury Snow Bowl, while Rikert Ski Touring Center was utilized for Nordic competitions.
Farrell placed ninth with a two-run combined time of 1:56.28, earning his third top-10 finish of the year. Thanks to the performance, he claimed the 16th and final spot among men's Alpine skiers from the East Region for the March 5-8 NCAA Championship, giving Saint Michael's representation at the national meet for the fifth time in six years. The Alpine portion of the event will occur at Park City Mountain Resort in Park City, Utah.
Junior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) stood 27th after his opening run but finished the day tied for 18th in 1:57.13, and senior Carl-Oscar Bredengen (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) placed 42nd at 2:00.75. Joining him for a final race in Purple and Gold was classmate Matt Beers (Wrentham, Mass./Killington Mountain School), who placed 46th in 2:01.26. Sophomore Kevin Krone (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) was 0.36 seconds behind in 47th, and senior Tim Spangler (Summit, N.J./Summit) also competed in his last college race.
During the women's giant slalom, senior Karen Bell (Ogden, Utah/Rowmark Ski Academy/Montana State) clocked in at 2:06.78 to place 32nd, her best finish in two seasons as a Purple Knight. Sophomore Mary Joyce (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) matched the best finish of her career, claiming 42nd at 2:09.61, and first-year Abigail Hotaling (Fabius, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) placed a season-high 49th at 2:10.92.
First-year Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) was 52nd in the men's mass-start 20K freestyle, clocking in at 50:21.5. The placement was the second best this season by La Liberte, who occupied the Purple Knights' top spot in all 10 individual races he completed, and was the top placement in a race greater than 10K by a Saint Michael's skier, man or woman. Junior Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) was 62nd in 56:31.1, and sophomore Samuel Fogg (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) took 63rd at 57:05.1.
The women competed in a 15K freestyle with a mass start, as senior Silke Hynes (Burlington, Ontario/Milton District) concluded her career with a 53rd-place showing in 48:13.7. Sophomore Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) was 56th at 49:52.1, and first-year Julia Snyder (Fairfax, Vt./BFA-Fairfax) placed 58th in 50:35.5.
