Trio of Purple Knights crack top 30 in GS at season-opening UVM Carnival

STOWE, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College Alpine skiing team opened its season on Friday, competing in day one of the University of Vermont Carnival at Stowe Mountain Resort. The slalom races will be run on Saturday, while the Nordic events are slated for Feb. 2-3 at the Trapp Family Lodge.

As a team, the Purple Knights stand ninth out of 13 schools, with 70 points. For the women, senior Gabbi Hall (San Anselmo, Calif./Forest Charter School) placed 24th during the giant slalom in a time of 2:11.82, while classmate Christina Billotti (Massapequa, N.Y./Green Mountain Valley School) was 31st at 2:13.82, with her two-run combined time leaving her just 0.12 seconds short of the top 30.

Four other Purple Knights competed, with first-years Mary Joyce (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), Sarah Morse (New London, N.H./Gould Academy), Alicia Riley (Pittsford, N.Y./Stratton Mountain School) and Willow Smith (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow) each taking part in their initial college event.

On the men's side, first-year Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) was 24th in the giant slalom at 2:06.60, and sophomore Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) was 29th in 2:07.85, just 0.81 ticks short of the top 25. Senior Andrew Keating (Stowe, Vt./Burke Mountain Academy), junior Carl-Oscar Bredengen (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) and first-years Cam Furrer (Wolcott, Vt./Mount Mansfield Winter Academy) and Kevin Krone (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) also raced.
