Softball Splits Twinbill With League-Leader Bryant
SMITHFIELD, Vt. - Saint Michael's College (15-23, 9-15 Northeast-10 Conference) split a softball doubleheader at league-leader Bryant University (24-14, 22-4 NE-10) on Sunday, losing game one, 6-2, and winning game two, 8-3.
In the nightcap, Saint Michael's snapped a scoreless tie with five runs in the top of the fourth inning to end a five-game losing skid. Sophomore Maggie Russell (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) led the way offensively, as she went 4-for-4 with four singles and two runs scored. Junior Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) chipped in by going 3-for-3 with three singles, while junior Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) and sophomore Katy Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) each doubled and singled. Freshman Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) improved to 9-10 on the season by pitching a complete-game six-hitter, fanning seven batters.
In game one, Bryant snapped a 1-all tie with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to clinch its first NE-10 regular-season title. For the Purple Knights, Russell and senior Elizabeth Pigeon (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) each went 2-for-3 at the plate, with Russell scoring a run, while senior Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) and sophomore Lindsey Howland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) both added RBI doubles, while Roberge suffered the complete-game loss, striking out seven batters.
Saint Michael's plays its final four games of the season at home, hosting Bentley College on Monday in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m., and Merrimack College on Tuesday in a twinbill starting at 3:30 p.m.
