Softball Suffers Pair Of One-Run Losses At Stonehill
EASTON, Mass. - Stonehill College (19-18-1, 12-13-1 Northeast-10 Conference) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take both games of a softball doubleheader versus Saint Michael's College (14-22, 8-14 NE-10) on Saturday, 4-3 and 2-1.
In the opener, Stonehill connected for back-to-back solo home runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal a victory from Saint Michael's. The Purple Knights erased a 2-1 deficit in the top half of the seventh with a pair of runs, as sophomore Katy Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) laced a two-run single. Offensively, sophomore Lindsey Howland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) ripped two doubles, while classmate Maggie Russell (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) also went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Junior Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) suffered the complete-game loss on the mound, striking out eight batters.
In game two, the Skyhawks scored two unearned runs with two outs in the last of the seventh inning to complete the sweep. Saint Michael's took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, as freshman Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) singled and scored on a base hit by senior Elizabeth Pigeon (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans). The scored remained 1-0 until the final inning, as an error by O'Connor opened the door for Stonehill's win. On the mound, O'Connor pitched the complete game, allowing just five hits and no walks while fanning 13 batters. Offensively, Pigeon had two singles for Saint Michael's, while junior Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) had a triple and a single to pace the Purple Knights' eight-hit attack.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Sunday, as the Purple Knights visit Bryant University in an NE-10 doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
