Softball Blanks Saint Rose, 3-0 And 2-0
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael's College recorded a pair of shutout victories versus the College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference softball action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field. In the opener, the Purple Knights blanked the Golden Knights, 3-0, and in game two, Saint Michael's (12-18, 6-10 NE-10) shutout Saint Rose (5-23, 4-12 NE-10), 2-0.
In the opener, junior Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) threw a three-hitter, allowing just one walk while striking out 11 batters, in improving to 5-10 on the season. At the plate, classmate Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) had the big hit, a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning to erase a scoreless tie. Roberge added a double and single to pace the Purple Knights' seven-hit attack, while junior Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) scored a run and drove in a run in the sixth inning.
For the Golden Knights, sophomore Kristen Calahan (LaGrange, N.Y.) took the complete-game loss on the mound, striking out five batters. Freshman Kerry Monahan (East Meadow, N.Y.) doubled for Saint Rose, while junior Evelyn Peters (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and freshman Katie Wiemann (Huntington Station, N.Y.) each singled.
In game two, freshman Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) pitched a five-hitter, allowing no walks while fanning five batters, to improve to 7-8 on the season. Saint Michael's opened the scoring in the first inning, as Brooks scored after singling. Brooks added an RBI single in the third inning to plate sophomore Maggie Russell (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) and complete the scoring. Currier and sophomore Katy Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) also singled twice for the Purple Knights, while freshman Ashley Harkins (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) doubled.
For Saint Rose, sophomore Samantha Harrington (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) doubled and singled, while Calahan, Wiemann and freshman Cara Piccarreto (Rochester, N.Y.) added a single apiece. Sophomore Melissa Salisbury (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) took the complete-game loss on the mound, walking no one and striking out one.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Sunday with a 12 p.m. home doubleheader versus Bentley College. Saint Rose next plays at home on Sunday against Stonehill College at 1 p.m.
