Softball Splits Pair Of One-Run Games With SNHU
COLCHESTER, Vt. Saint Michael's College split a pair of one-run games with Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference softball action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field. In the opener, the Purple Knights were edged by the Penmen, 6-5, and in game two, Saint Michael's (9-13, 3-5 NE-10) recorded a 5-4, 10-inning victory versus Southern New Hampshire (6-12, 5-1 NE-10).
In the nightcap, Saint Michael's scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to rally for the win and hand Southern New Hampshire its first conference loss this season. Junior Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) pulled the Purple Knights to within 4-3 with an RBI single in the 10th, and scored the tying run on a throwing error following sophomore Katy Newland's (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) sacrifice bunt attempt. The next batter, freshman Ashley Harkins (Colchester, Vt./Colchester), also laid down a sacrifice bunt, and when Newland tried to take third, the throw sailed out of play, allowing Newland to walk home with the winning run.
Brooks finished with two singles in game two, while senior Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) tripled and singled. Katy Newland added a double and a single, while junior Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) earned the win on the mound with 3.2 innings of relief of freshman starter Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass.), allowing one earned run while recording six strikeouts.
For the Penmen, freshman Ashley Bernstein (Stoughton, Mass.) took the complete-game loss, allowing just two earned runs and seven hits while striking out three. At the plate, Bernstein hit a solo home run with one out in the fifth inning, breaking up O'Connor's perfect game, and added a game-tying RBI double with one out in the seventh inning, knocking O'Connor out of the game. Junior Felicia Brum (Braintree, Mass.) added two singles and a run scored in the loss.
In game one, Southern New Hampshire erased a 4-0 deficit with six runs in the top of the fourth inning, and hung on for the win. Freshman Karissa Bettencourt (Norton, Mass.) tied the game with a two-run double, and the next batter, Brum, gave the Penmen the lead for good with a two-run single. Both hits came off of O'Connor, who relieved Roberge after the first three batters reached in the inning and suffered the loss in relief.
For the Penmen, senior Lindsey Yeomans (Durham, Conn.) was the lone multiple hitter in the opener with two singles, while junior Ashley Smith (Franklin, N.H.) earned the victory with six-plus innings of work, allowing two earned runs and fanning five batters. Bernstein picked up the save, as she stranded the tying run at third base in the bottom of the seventh inning.
For the Purple Knights, O'Connor singled twice, knocked in a run and scored a run in game one, while junior Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) singled and scored two runs.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Thursday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at American International College. Southern New Hampshire next hosts Stonehill College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
