Softball Drops Doubleheader At Gene Cusic Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Saint Michael's College (4-6) lost two softball games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Thursday, falling to West Chester University, 4-3, and Edinboro University, 8-3.

In the opener, Saint Michael's could not rally past West Chester despite tallying a season-high 14 hits. Freshman Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) led the Purple Knights with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate and two runs batted in. Sophomore Maggie Russell (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) also went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while junior Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union), classmate Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) and sophomore Katy Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) each went 2-for-4. On the mound, Roberge suffered the complete-game loss, as she struck out 10 and allowed eight hits in falling to 2-3 on the season.

In the nightcap versus Edinboro, Saint Michael's managed just five hits. Junior Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) was the lone Purple Knight with multiple hits, as she went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer. Brooks, sophomore Lindsey Howland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) and freshman Ashley Harkins (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) each singled, while O'Connor and fellow freshman Jenna Laniewski (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) each pitched three innings, with O'Connor taking the loss to fall to 2-3.

Saint Michael's completes its spring break trip to Florida on Friday with a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Florida Gulf Coast University.
