Softball Sweeps Twinbill At Gene Cusic Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Junior Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) combined to strike out 18 batters as Saint Michael's College (4-4) defeated Slippery Rock University, 7-2, and Bloomfield College, 6-3, on Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

In the opener versus Slippery Rock, Roberge fanned 14 batters, one off her own program record, in a complete game four-hitter. At the plate, junior Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) led the way by going 3-for-3 with a double. Classmate Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) went 2-for-3 with a run batted in, while sophomore Katy Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

In the nightcap against Bloomfield, Roberge struck out four of the final five batters to earn the save. Freshman Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) picked up the victory on the mound by pitching into the sixth inning, earning three strikeouts. She helped her cause at the plate by going 2-for-4, while Brooks also went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Sophomore Maggie Russell (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) added a 2-for-3 performance.

Saint Michael's returns to action on Thursday, as the Purple Knights take on West Chester University of Pennsylvania at 1 p.m., and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania at 4 p.m.
