Softball Splits On Opening Day Of Gene Cusic Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Junior Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) led the Saint Michael's softball team to a 4-3, extra-inning win versus Palm Beach Atlantic University in the season opener on Saturday, but the Purple Knights fell in game two to Dominican College, 5-2.

In Saturday's first contest, Roberge struck out nine in an eight-inning, complete game effort to earn the victory. Classmate Meg Currier's (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) RBI triple proved to be the difference for the Purple Knights.

In the nightcap, sophomore Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) 4-for-4 effort at the plate, including a home run, wasn't enough as Saint Michael's was edged by Dominican. Freshman Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) allowed four runs in the first inning, but settled down after that to throw a complete game while recording nine strikeouts.

Saint Michael's returns to action at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Sunday, as the Purple Knights take on the University of North Dakota at 9 a.m., and Wilmington (Del.) College at 11 a.m.
