Men's Lacrosse Begins 2022 Season with 8-5 Setback at Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team opened its season with an 8-5 loss at Molloy College on Saturday at the RVC Sports Complex. The Purple Knights were tied for fifth in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) preseason poll.

  • The teams had last met in 2014, as all seven contests between the schools have been at Molloy.
  • Saint Michael's played the earliest opener in program history, as the Purple Knights had only played three prior February games. Its previous earliest opener had occurred on Feb. 25, 2003, at Molloy.


  • In a low-scoring opening stanza, Ford and sophomore Brendan McDonough tallied at 2:56 and 48 seconds, respectively, to give Molloy a 2-0 lead, with Ford converting a man-up opportunity.
  • Wilson won the ensuing faceoff, and Simonson netted his first college goal at 29 ticks off of a Katavolos feed. Collins leveled the score at 12:06 of the second quarter on a solo effort.
  • Molloy netted the next five goals, with Downing putting home his team's second extra-man marker at 10:37 and Rodin scoring 40 seconds later. Downing and Rodin both added another goal in the run, while Rodin assisted Ford's man-up marker at 6:00 of the third period that made it 7-2.
  • Katavolos snapped the Molloy scoring streak with an unassisted goal with 1:58 to go, as the Purple Knights ended the game on a 3-1 run. Katavolos scored again at 8:13 of the fourth stanza, and Collins tallied 43 seconds later thanks to sophomore Dylan Morgan's (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) pass.

  • Next regular-season game is March 6 vs. Bentley University, 1 p.m. for the Purple Knights' Northeast-10 Conference opener.
