Men's Lacrosse Ousted by No. 7 Pace in NE10 Action

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team was defeated by No. 7 Pace University, 12-4, on Saturday on Duffy Field during a Northeast-10 Conference game. The Purple Knights are now 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the NE10, while the Setters are 4-1 and 3-0. Pace's ranking is according to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA). The Setters have also qualified for the last three NCAA Tournaments.

First-year Jon Lockwood (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) netted a two-point day with a goal and an assist while picking up a ground ball. Junior Hunter Goodwin (Milton, Vt./Milton) and sophomores Ralph Grillone III (Brockton, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) and Alec Sharlow (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson) each turned in a goal while Goodwin picked up two ground balls and Grillone caused two turnovers. First-year Joseph Gerardi (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) pitched in an assist and had two ground balls. Junior Matt Cotter (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) and sophomore Justin Richmond (New Market, Md./Linganore) both caused two turnovers while Cotter scooped up six ground balls and Richmond had three. Senior Bobby Frank (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) picked up five ground balls while classmate Johnny Karanasios (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) and sophomore Will Moriarty (Ashland, Mass./Catholic Memorial) each had three ground balls.

Richmond was 8-for-16 on faceoffs while senior Matt Arnold (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) went 2-for-3. Senior Jake Sonberg (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) had four saves during the loss in 17:53 of play before first-year Dominic Joy (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) had one save in 19:03 of relief and classmate Herb Hazelton (Darien, Conn./Brewster Academy) picked up four in 23:04.

Senior Liam Brennan led Pace with four points on one goal and three assists while junior Wyatt Barfoot and first-year Joseph Diggle added three points each, as Diggle tallied two goals and an assist and Barfoot had one goal and two assists. Juniors Peter Bashar and Kevin Vogelsberg and sophomore Bruno Surace all registered two goals. Two other Setters pitched in a goal each. Junior Steven Weindler was 9-for-16 on faceoffs while senior Robert Beshlian had 16 saves and two ground balls during the win.

After Pace senior Ryan O'Hagan opened up the first period with a goal at 10:29, Sharlow answered back during a man-up sequence at 9:00 for the Purple Knights. The Setters then tallied the next three goals during a 3:47 span with the last coming from Brennan at 4:30 before Lockwood assisted Goodwin with 59 seconds left on a man-up goal as Saint Michael's trailed 4-2. The Setters notched four goals in the second stanza as Bashar registered two of them. Pace's first two markers came within 43 seconds of each other at 12:50 and 12:07 with the last two coming at 3:33 and 3:17, as the Setters went ahead 8-2 by the end of the first half.

After the visitors recorded the first two goals of the third quarter at 14:00 and 8:04, Grillone sailed a shot past Beshlian at 3:59 before Vogelsberg slipped one in at 2:24 for Pace. Diggle tallied for the Setters at 7:30 of the final period before Lockwood notched the final goal for Saint Michael's at 5:07.

The Purple Knights are off until next Saturday when they visit No. 8 Adelphi University at 3 p.m. The Panthers have qualified for five of the last seven NCAA Tournaments.
