Grillone Nets Hat Trick in Four-Point Day, Lifts Purple Knights Past Georgian Court, 9-6

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Sophomore Ralph Grillone III (Brockton, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) notched four points to aid the Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team to a 9-6 victory over Georgian Court (N.J.) University on Thursday afternoon at the GCU Track & Field Complex. The Purple Knights improved to 2-2, registering their second straight win, while the Lions are 3-3. Saint Michael's is now 3-0 against Georgian Court in program history.

Grillone paved the way for Saint Michael's with a hat trick and an assist along with four ground balls, while first-year Jon Lockwood (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) registered his first collegiate goals with a hat trick and added three ground balls. Sophomores Aidan Maron (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional), Alec Sharlow (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson), and Dante Wentz (Stowe, Vt./Portsmouth Abbey School) each contributed a goal, with Wentz tallying his first career goal. Senior Jake Sonberg (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) had seven saves and five ground balls.

Seniors Colin Cronin (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) and Johnny Karanasios (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) scooped up five ground balls and caused two turnovers each, while classmates Bobby Frank (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and Neil Gallagher (Stowe, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) notched four and three ground balls, respectively. Senior Dan Dromeshauser (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) was 10-for-15 on faceoffs while sophomore Justin Richmond (New Market, Md./Linganore) was 3-for-4. Richmond pushed his career faceoff victories total to 113, passing Gene D'Alessandro '01 (111) for ninth in program history.

Saint Michael's held its prior opponent, Chestnut Hill (Pa.) College, scoreless during the second half and for the final 30:01 on Tuesday before blanking Georgian Court in the first quarter on Thursday, posting three straight shutout periods for the first time since April 6, 2006, against Franklin Pierce University. The Lions didn't score until the Purple Knights' shutout streak had reached 56:55, their longest since the 2004 season.

Senior Michael Saladino led the Lions with three points on two goals and an assist along with three ground balls while four other players pitched in a goal each. Sophomore Christopher Mulholland denied five shots in the first half before classmate Austin Geissel relieved him, making five saves.

After Dromeshauser won the opening faceoff, the Purple Knights got on the board early as Grillone scored at 14:08 of the first quarter and Wentz tallied another at 10:04. Neither team saw the back of the net again until 14:17 of the second quarter, when Lockwood notched the first of two goals in 60 seconds, and Grillone tallied his second goal at 4:51 to put the Purple and Gold up 5-0. Saladino registered a goal for the Lions at 3:06 with assistance from senior Jeffrey Galatola before junior Connor Houghton pitched in another tally at 1:27. However, Sharlow finished the first-half scoring 25 seconds later, making it 6-2 and kicking off a 4-0 run.

Grillone sailed one past Geissel for his third goal through the aid of first-year Joseph Gerardi (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) at 14:14 in the third stanza. Lockwood finished his hat trick at 8:17 before Richmond won the faceoff and Maron went down and scored off of Grillone's feed at 8:00 to push the lead to 9-2.

Saladino and Galatola got shots past Sonberg at 6:31 and 3:43, respectively, sparking a 4-0 run. In the first 1:38 of the final quarter, the Lions tallied two goals to bring themselves within three of Saint Michael's, and Saladino rung the post at 7:04. On the final scoring bid of the game for either team, junior Ryder Verdoni hit the post with 1:16 remaining, with Sonberg picking up the ground ball.

The Purple Knights return home to host Post University on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
