No. 9 men's lacrosse betters AIC on Senior Day to remain unbeaten in NE-10 play

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The ninth-ranked Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team set the program's consecutive wins record with its ninth straight victory during a 10-6 Northeast-10 Conference win over American International College on Saturday's Senior Day at Duffy Field. Saint Michael's also set a program mark with its ninth conference win. As a result of other action in the conference, the Purple Knights move into sole possession of first place in the NE-10.

Saint Michael's, which is ranked in the current United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll, improves to 10-2 overall and 9-0 in the league, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-13 and 0-10.

Senior Marty Vanzo (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) totaled four goals and two assists for Saint Michael's to reach 134 career points and move into seventh in program history, passing Kevin Duffy '03 (133), George Finn '90 (133) and Saint Michael's Athletic Hall of Famer Ray Roch '87 (130). Vanzo also moved into a tie for fourth with 54 career assists and broke into the program's top 10 with his 80th career goal. Junior Evan Antolino (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) scored three times, and senior Pete Donnally (Madison, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) notched a goal, two assists and five ground balls. Junior Cooper Quenneville (Shoreham, Vt./Gould Academy) tallied a goal and an assist, while classmate Tim McDonald (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) added a marker and four caused turnovers. Junior Chris Casserly (Kensington, N.H./Exeter) had seven ground balls and went 6-for-9 on face-offs, sophomore Luke Solms (Bedford, N.H./Northfield Mount Hermon) totaled five ground balls, and senior Evan White (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) recorded four. Junior Chris DeMairo (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made 13 saves.

Sophomore Bobby Spano (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) scored twice for American International, while junior Dan Gryszko (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) had a goal and four ground balls. Three other players found the back of the net, while sophomore Casey Bordeaux (Somers, Conn./Somers) registered seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. First-year Michael Palmieri (Guilford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) went 7-for-10 on draws, and classmate Alexis Buque (Whitby, Ontario/Father Leo J. Austin) stopped 24 shots.

After the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 6:28 remaining in the opening quarter, Vanzo knotted the game at one apiece with a goal 5:13 later. Vanzo found the back of the net for the second time with 5:14 left in the second period before the visitors scored the next two goals 55 seconds apart to grab a 3-2 lead at the half.

Five Purple Knights scored during a 6-1 run that lasted until the 12:45 mark of the fourth quarter to give the hosts an 8-4 advantage. American International got a goal back with 9:23 remaining before Antolino had back-to-back markers 6:01 apart. The visitors scored with 1:22 left to cut their deficit to four, but couldn't crack DeMairo and Purple Knights' defense to climb any closer.

The Purple Knights honored DeMairo, Donnally, Vanzo, D.J. Dauria (Sherborn, Mass./Dover-Sherborn), Austin Driscoll (Hingham, Mass./Hingham (Dickinson), Neil Kelly (Narragansett, R.I./Bishop Hendricken), Liam Pushee (Hanover, N.H./Hanover), Asa Sargent (Ripton, Vt./Middlebury Union), Dane Sengaloun-Homsab (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) and Max Zuccarini (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) in a Senior Day ceremony before the game.

Saint Michael's is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts No. 3 Merrimack College in its final regular-season home game at 4 p.m.
