Donnally reaches 100-goal plateau, Ivory earns first coaching victory in 14-9 win at Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - The 11th-ranked Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team rallied for its first victory under interim head coach Pat Ivory '08, and senior Pete Donnally (Madison, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) became the fourth player in program history to reach the 100-goal plateau in a 14-9 victory over previously undefeated Mercy College on Thursday at Mavericks Field. The Purple and Gold is now 1-1, while the Mavericks slipped to 6-1.

Donnally became just the second Purple Knight in the last 21 years to reach the century mark, with his 101 career goals now trailing only Greg Lazarus '08 (109) and Saint Michael's Athletic Hall of Fame members Rick Saba '92 (109) and Ray Roch '87 (107). Ivory picked up his first win as a college head coach after rejoining the program in January following the resignation of Brian Kingsbury, who had served as head coach since July 2011. Ivory previously played for four years at the College before serving as an assistant coach between 2009 and 2011.

Senior Marty Vanzo (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) turned in game highs of four goals and six points for the visitors, and junior Evan Antolino (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) had two goals and an assist. Senior Max Zuccarini (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) tacked on a pair of markers, and junior Chris DeMairo (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made 14 saves before first-year T.J. Bicknell (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) had two in the final 2:43.

Sophomore Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) had a hat trick and a helper for Mercy, first-year Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) scored twice, and senior Blaze Yeager (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead/NYIT) was 14-for-23 on face-offs with 12 ground balls. Junior Mike Cashman (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) took the loss, not making any saves in 45 minutes, before first-year A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had three during the fourth quarter.

After Mercy scored the first three goals by the time 5:53 remained in the opening quarter, Vanzo scored two in a matter of 1:31 to spark a tying 3-0 run, and Donnally later knotted the game at four with 10:21 to go in the second. Wood netted a pair of markers to put his team back in front, 6-4, but the next six tallies came from Saint Michael's players, with Antolino making it 7-6 five seconds before halftime.

Early in the third, Donnally, senior defender Evan White (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) and Antolino all scored during a seven-second flurry, extending the lead to 10-6 at 13:40. Donnally's goal in that stretch was his 100th. Wood responded at 11:49, but Vanzo scored the next two markers, and Mercy never again got close than four goals.

Saint Michael's continued a difficult week that included a narrow 8-5 loss at No. 1 Mercyhurst University on Sunday and a bus accident that had postponed today's game by a day. The Purple Knights are ranked by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and continue their road trip on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), which is tied for fifth in the USILA national poll.
