COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's basketball junior Matt Bonds (Accokeek, Md./North Point) earned a Northeast-10 Conference All-Conference selection and first-year Levi Holmes III (East Brunswick, N.J./Rutgers Prep) was named to the All-Rookie Team, the league announced on Thursday. Bonds received his initial career all-league nod, landing on the third team, while Holmes secured a spot on the league's six-member All-Rookie squad.
Twenty-one players from around the league earned NE-10 All-Conference honors, with Bonds one of five selected for the third team. Bonds landed his second postseason award, being previously chosen for the rookie squad in 2013-14, as Purple Knights have now been lauded as all-league five times in the last three years. Holmes gave Saint Michael's representation on the NE-10 All-Rookie Team for the fifth time in eight seasons.
Bonds recorded double digits in 24 of 26 games while grabbing at least eight boards 25 times. He turned in career highs in scoring, (16.2), rebounding (12.3), offensive boards (4.3), assists (44) and blocks (12) while tying his best in steals (18). Bonds, who is second in all of Division II in doubles-doubles (19), rebounding and offensive rebounding, leading the NE-10 in all three categories. He is also third in the league in free throw attempts per game, ninth in free throw makes per contest and 13th in scoring. Since offensive rebounds began being tracked in 1992-93, Bonds has been the only Purple Knight with 100 in a season, with 107 last winter and 111 this year.
Bonds' 19 double-doubles are the most by a Purple Knight since complete rebounding figures became available in 1981-82. Bonds became the seventh Purple Knight with 400 points and 300 rebounds in a season, and his 27 career double-doubles tie for the most in the program since 1981-82. Bonds placed 10th in school history with 320 boards this winter, the most since Ken Johnson '76 (346) in 1975-76, and he also passed Peter Cragan '70 (769) to take over 10th in program history with 780 career caroms. Bonds enters his senior year with 959 points.
A starter in 21 of the team's 26 games, Holmes reached double figures in scoring 16 times while grabbing at least five boards 11 times and handing out multiple assists on 10 occasions. He also hit at least one three-pointer in 24 outings. Holmes led the team and is 15th in the NE-10 in three-point shooting (41.5%) while finishing second among Purple Knights in scoring (11.3), steals (19) and threes (51), and third in rebounding (3.7) and field goal percentage (45.6%). His 51 total three-pointers are the fourth-most ever by a Purple Knight rookie. Among all NE-10 first-years, Holmes is second in threes and three-point percentage, just 0.1 percent off the lead.
The Purple Knights ended the year 7-19 overall and 5-16 in the NE-10, going 5-7 following a 2-12 start.
