COLCHESTER, Vt. - Recent Saint Michael's College graduates Katelyn Billings (Saint Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy-Saint Albans) and Jared Berry (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) have been named the College's Institutional Scholar-Athlete honorees, the Northeast-10 Conference announced last week. The duo will be selected from a pool of 32 honorees, 16 men and 16 women, as the 2009-10 NE-10 Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year. The winners will be announced Monday, June 7 at the NE-10 Awards Banquet in Burlington, Vt.
COLCHESTER, VT – Twenty Saint Michael’s College student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom were inducted into national honors societies this year. Softball, field hockey, women’s swimming, women’s cross country, Nordic skiing, both men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s soccer, volleyball, and women’s basketball are represented.

Keleher ’15 Memorial Award on Tuesday, it was announced at the College’s Senior Awards Luncheon earlier today. The Keleher Award is presented annually to the outstanding male and female scholar-athletes in the College’s graduating class.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College rising senior student-athletes Pete Estes (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) and Meghan McLaughlin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) have been selected to represent the College at the 2010 NCAA Career in Sports Forum, it was recently announced. The NCAA Career in Sports Forum will take place Tuesday-Friday (May 11-14), and will be held at the NCAA’s headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College Athletic Department announced the 2010 Block ‘M’ Award winners at its 63rd annual banquet on April 29. There were several awards handed out, including the Purple Knight Coach of the Year Award, and Coaches’ Awards for each of Saint Michael’s 21 intercollegiate varsity sport programs.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – The spring season officially wrapped up for all of Saint Michael’s College athletic teams this week, with the exception of women’s tennis who qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year. Men’s lacrosse ended their season on a high note, serving a 17-8 loss to Southern New Hampshire, while women’s lacrosse wrapped up with a 17-16 overtime loss at Saint Anselm, before falling 21-3 to #7 Stonehill on Saturday. Baseball ended their season with a 22-14 loss at Saint Rose, before falling in their doubleheader to Plattsburgh State, 11-1 and 11-10. Softball had a very busy week at the end of their Northeast-10 schedule, losing 12-0 and 8-0 to New Haven and 1-0 and 9-4 to Southern New Hampshire. They snapped their 12-game losing streak on “Senior Day” with a 1-0 win in the opener against American International, before wrapping up with a 5-2 loss in the nightcap and 4-0 and 5-0 losses to Assumption the following day. The 63rd Annual Block M Dinner was celebrated on Thursday evening, honoring many student-athletes for their dedication and commitment in their respective sports.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – This week in Saint Michael’s College athletics, we saw the end of the 2009-10 seasons of two respective sports, men’s and women’s tennis who fell in the midst of Northeast-10 playoff battle. Men’s and women’s lacrosse both suffered losses earlier in the week before winning their Northeast-10 games on the road on Saturday. Men’s lacrosse defeated Assumption 13-9 to keep their post-season hopes alive. Baseball was 2-5 in contests this week, defeated in-state rival Norwich 7-4. Softball struggled against their Northeast-10 foes, dropping their six contests throughout the week’s play.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Men’s tennis moved up in the standings to earn a playoff bid after their 3-2 week. Women’s tennis remained successful, winning their “Senior Day” game to seal home-court advantage in the playoffs. Women’s lacrosse was 1-2 this week, earning a clutch victory at home against Assumption on Saturday, 19-9. Men’s lacrosse suffered two one-goal deficits; 9-8 at Saint Anselm and 11-10 against Pace. The baseball team was 1-2 this week, as their schedule was impacted by the weather. Softball’s schedule shuffled around a bit as well, as they were 1-3 in Northeast-10 action over the week.
COLCHESTER, Vt. - Six Saint Michael's College student-athletes representing four different sports programs were named to the Northeast-10 Conference Academic All-Conference teams for the 2009-10 winter sports season, it was announced on Thursday. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have legitimate athletic credentials, have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and be a sophomore in academic standing.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – We saw a positive week of effort on behalf of Saint Michael’s College athletics this week. The men’s lacrosse team went a perfect 2-0 with a 15-7 win over Franklin Pierce and 10-8 “W” versus Adelphi. The women’s lacrosse team recorded their first victory of the season with their 16-15 double-overtime win against Franklin Pierce before being shutout 24-0 by the powerhouse Adelphi Panthers. Women’s tennis tallied an 8-1 against Merrimack in their solo match of the week, while the men faced an 8-1 loss against the Warriors and a 9-0 shutout against Le Moyne. Baseball and softball both had full schedules with four double-headers apiece, as baseball went 2-1-5 in competition, while softball went 1-7 in Northeast-10 action.
COLCHESTER, Vt. - Women’s tennis hosted Southern New Hampshire in the Tarrant Recreation Center on Tuesday, where they were edged 5-4 by the Penmen. On Thursday, women’s tennis blanked AIC 9-0, as the softball team split their home opener against Stonehill with a 5-4 win, but coming up short in the second game, 4-1. Baseball faced nationally ranked Franklin Pierce who they were defeated by 5-1 and 8-4 in the doubleheader. The following day, men’s lacrosse fell to the #2 Le Moyne Dolphins 11-5, while baseball lost their pair of games at Southern New Hampshire 13-4 and 8-2. Wrapping up the weekend on Saturday, women’s lacrosse was unable to retain their lead against #10 New Haven, dropping the contest 12-11, as softball lost their doubleheader match against Franklin Pierce 4-3 in the eighth inning, before a 3-0 shutout in game two.
COLCHESTER, Vt. - At Saint Michael's College, we embrace the calm before the storm in our spring athletic schedule. We saw seven contests played while the student-athletes rested up after their busy spring break training schedules and geared up for the busiest month in athletics that will commence this week. Men's tennis was unable to win a point over the week, as they were blanked 9-0 by both Stonehill and Bentley. Women's tennis fell 8-1 to league-leading Stonehill before mirroring that score with an 8-1 victory over Bentley. Women's Lacrosse lost their Northeast-10 opener at American International, 22-11, while men's lacrosse faced a 12-4 setback in their Northeast-10 opener at Merrimack before returning to the field to beat American International 14-9 over the weekend.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Women’s tennis fit five games into their schedule, going 1-4 against their opponents in Orlando, Fla. Also in the Sunshine State, baseball earned their first win as they went 1-8 in Palm Beach and softball went .500 in Clermont, splitting their results 5-5. Women’s lacrosse lost their contest in Winter Park, Fla. before returning to Duffy Field to be defeated by C.W. Post, ranked third in the country. Men’s lacrosse took to the road to Long Island, N.Y., picking up their first win of the season as they split the success of their two games to go 1-1.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Before many students took off to warmer climates or were stuck in the torrential rain that is sweeping over parts of the Northeast, Saint Michael’s College’s athletic teams are embracing the break in the academic calendar to dive right in to their 2010 spring schedules. Representing Saint Michael’s at the NCAA Skiing Championships in Colorado this past week was Brad Harden, the second straight year he's represented the College at the NCAAs. Men’s lacrosse opened their season on Duffy Field on Wednesday, dropping a 14-12 decision to Plattsburgh State University. Softball collected a 6-5 win in the first of two games against Limestone College on Sunday, but faced an 11-0 shutout to the team later that evening. Women’s tennis dropped their first non-conference match of the season, losing to Wayne State University, 8-1. Baseball opened their season in Palm Beach, Fla., with a 4-1 loss to Caldwell College on Sunday.
COLCHESTER, Vt. - A handful of Saint Michael's College spring sports teams are heading South this weekend to play non-conference contests during the College's week-long spring break. The Purple Knights' baseball, softball, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, and women's tennis programs are scheduled to play a combined 28 games in the next eight days, with baseball and softball kicking off the 2010 season.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Whether or not the weather agrees, the winter sports season has officially come to a close at Saint Michael’s College, with exception of the NCAA Skiing Championships this coming week. On Wednesday, the men’s ice hockey team reached a fateful season-ending 5-1 loss against Assumption College in the semifinals of the Northeast-10 tournament. And just like that, spring began. Women’s lacrosse opened their season at home, falling 9-8 to Keene State on Saturday. Men’s and women’s tennis have given Saint Michael’s athletics a lot to look forward to, as they dominated Pace University on Saturday, the men winning 6-3 and the women sweeping 9-0.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Only those athletes participating in postseason events have any more of their winter season remaining, as we watched our last basketball games of the season on Wednesday and women’s ice hockey played their final games at Holy Cross over the weekend. Men’s ice hockey controlled their final game of the regular season on Tuesday, defeating Stonehill 4-1 before going on to end Southern New Hampshire’s season in a 7-5 NE-10 quarterfinal victory. Women’s ice hockey faced a 5-2 loss against Holy Cross on Saturday, followed by a 3-3 tie with Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon. Women’s basketball ended their season on a high note, overcoming the Saint Anselm Hawks 45-35 at Ross Sports Center on Wednesday, while the men took the court afterwards and finished their season with a 80-68 setback against the Hawks. Skiing took part in the EISA Championship, hosted by Middlebury College, over the weekend and finished in 10th place.
COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Northeast-10 Conference recognized 172 Saint Michael's College student-athletes last week by naming them to the Fall 2009 Commissioner's Honor Roll. To be eligible for selection to the NE-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded a minimum 3.0 semester grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the fall 2009 semester.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – As the weather outside begins to warm up, our winter athletics season is beginning to cool down here at Saint Michael’s College. Men’s and women’s basketball were unfortunately eliminated from playoffs after this week’s contests. The men’s team fell in overtime to Southern New Hampshire, 83-80 before surrendered 94-77 at Merrimack. The women’s team won 75-74 with a jumper at the buzzer against Southern New Hampshire, but was unable to continue their success at Merrimack, being defeated by the Warriors by a close 57-56 decision. Skiing placed 10th overall at the Williams College Winter Carnival over the weekend, while men’s and women’s swimming both finished sixth at the NEISDA Swimming Championship. Men’s hockey suffered two losses against tough ECAC competitors, falling 7-2 at Tufts before a 5-3 defeat at Connecticut College.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – We’re beginning to come to the end of another season here at Saint Michael’s, as we celebrated two “Senior Day” hockey events on Saturday. Men’s hockey staged a 4-3 comeback against Castleton, followed by a close 2-1 loss for the women. Prior to “Senior Day”, men’s hockey dropped a 5-2 decision to Skidmore on Friday night. The men’s and women’s basketball teams were 0-2 in their contests of the week, as the men faced a 79-72 loss at Franklin Pierce and a 76-61 decision at Stonehill. The women dropped a 91-56 final against the Ravens before surrendering 56-39 to the Skyhawks. Skiing finished in 10th at the Dartmouth Carnival, while the diving team competed at the NEISDA Diving Championship over the weekend, as the women finished in fourth place and the men followed in fifth.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – It was a busy week of action for Saint Michael’s College athletics. Men’s basketball had a stunning home win over league-leading Bentley, 60-51. Women’s basketball faced a loss at the buzzer against UMass Lowell, 64-62, before losing to Bentley, 75-56 on Saturday. Men’s ice hockey went 1-2 over the week, shutting out Southern New Hampshire, 5-0, before falling to #9 Williams, 4-1, and #10 Middlebury, 7-2. Women’s ice hockey lost their series against Holy Cross, 3-1 on Saturday and 3-0 on Sunday. Skiing placed 10th at the UVM Winter Carnival, while swimming and diving saw the men in sixth place and the women seventh at the Northeast-10 Championship.
COLCHESTER, Vt. - Come to the Ross Sports Center this Saturday in your best pink garb, as Saint Michael's College athletics will be holding its Winter Pink Zone Day in conjunction with the men's and women's basketball games versus Bentley University. After last season's successful "Think Pink" day, where the Purple Knights were able to raise more than $400, Saint Michael's athletics is hoping to achieve the goal of $1,500 for the 2009-10 academic year.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – This week in Saint Michael’s College athletics, we saw the women’s basketball team have a standout show with two wins, at home against American International (W, 64-54) and on the road at Adelphi (W, 67-62). The swimming and diving team also earned a victory over the Norwich Cadets, as the men won 184-109 and the women commanded a 211-62 final, before being edged at SUNY-Potsdam in a 142-96 loss for the men, and a 131-99 setback for the women. Men’s basketball dropped both contests of the week, first against American International (L, 64-57) and then over the weekend at Adelphi (L, 68-48). Both men’s and women’s hockey struggled to find success over the weekend, as the men fell 4-1 at Babson, followed by a 7-2 setback at UMass Boston. The women were shutout 6-0 against Norwich on Friday before being bested by the Beacons of UMass Boston, 4-2.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Men’s and women’s basketball earned their first sweep of the season in Ross Sports Center last Wednesday, as the women defeated the New Haven Chargers 59-44, followed by the men who walked away with a 72-66 win. On Saturday, however, both teams were unable to overcome the Assumption Greyhounds on the road, as the women fell 64-44, followed by a 77-60 loss for the men. Both men’s and women’s ice hockey faced shutouts on Friday night, as the men lost a 3-0 decision to Trinity College and the women surrendered 4-0 to Manhattanville. The following afternoon, men’s ice hockey turned their luck around to defeat Wesleyan University, 3-2 at Cairns Arena, while the women forced extra time on Salve Regina, but were unable to hold on in the 4-3 overtime loss. Swimming and diving split their outcomes on Wednesday against Clarkson, as the women swam away with a 157-79 victory, while the men dropped a 137-93 decision. Skiing placed 10th overall as they hosted the successful Saint Michael’s Carnival this past weekend, as many standout skiers were involved in the Purple Knights’ positive outcome.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – This week in Saint Michael’s College athletics was one of the busier weeks we’ve seen this semester, as all six winter sports were in action over the weekend. Skiing made its’ 2010 schedule debut with a 10th place finish at the Saint Lawrence University Carnival. Men’s basketball had a standout week, as they were undefeated in their Northeast-10 contests, defeating Southern Connecticut 78-76 and the Pace Setters 63-48. Women’s basketball was not as fortunate against these schools, as they were defeated 71-65 in overtime against Southern Connecticut, and 67-44 to the Setters. Men’s ice hockey experienced back-to-back overtimes, tying Saint Anselm, 6-6, and New England College, 4-4. The women’s ice hockey team also faced an overtime tie, as they drew 2-2 with Nichols College, but faced a 5-2 setback at Southern Connecticut the following afternoon. Swimming and diving traveled to Albany, N.Y. for a dual meet against the Saint Rose Golden Knights where the men swam to a 126-107 loss, as did the women, 128-108.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Purple Knight men’s and women’s soccer teams were recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on Wednesday as recipients of the 2009 Team Academic Award for posting a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher in the 2008-09 academic year. The women’s soccer team, under head coach Marcel Choquette, posted a team GPA of 3.21, earning them the award for the third time in four years. The men’s team, coached by James Franklin, posted a 3.18 team GPA, earning the award each year since 2006.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Men’s basketball faced a tough week of competition, as they were defeated on Wednesday by Saint Rose in overtime, 80-77, followed by a 75-67 loss to Le Moyne on Saturday. The women’s basketball team split their contests of the week, surrendering to a 57-41 loss at Saint Rose, but snapping their seven-game losing skid with a triumphant 64-48 victory against Le Moyne. Men’s ice hockey made program history with their 5-5 overtime tie against Colby College on Friday, but fell to Bowdoin 6-2 the following afternoon. Women’s ice hockey went 0-2 this past week, facing a 3-2 setback on Tuesday at Wesleyan, and then suffering a 7-0 shutout against UMass Boston on Friday at Cairns Arena. The swimming and diving teams returned to the pool after their five-week winter break, but suffered tough losses against Bentley University, as the men surrendered 144-90 to the Falcons, while the women faced a 158-76 loss.
COLCHESTER, Vt. – While most of Saint Michael’s was home enjoying their winter break, our winter athletic teams were hard at work, enjoying what Alliot meals were available to them and facing tough challengers across the board. Women’s ice hockey started the New Year as good as ever, defeating Colby College 5-3 on Saturday and Plymouth State 4-1 on Sunday in the Saint Michael’s College Holiday Classic, giving them first place in the tournament. The men’s basketball team went 2-1, winning the Pace University Holiday Classic before dropping their Northeast-10 contest against Bentley 82-69 this past weekend. Women’s basketball was 1-2, defeating Philadelphia University 58-54, but dropping their next two contests against Goldey-Beacom (L, 67-62) and Bentley (L, 49-43). Men’s ice hockey went 0-2 in the Holiday Classic, falling to Morrisville State 5-1 and Wentworth 6-3.
